UPDATE - 23 JAN

It has been 7 weeks since the community first heard that fresh water lakes were being added to the updated shishálh swiya Dock Management Plan and we’d like to share an update of what has been happening.

  1. The swiya Lakes Stewardship Alliance (sLSA) was formed, uniting representatives from all lakes.  Larry Van Hatten (Sakinaw) and Andrew McFadyen (Ruby) have volunteered to steer the Alliance.
  2. Numerous sub-committees have been formed and are working hard to gather vital information in areas such as Lake Biodiversity, Dock Engineering, Tenure History, Government Boathouse Regulations, Safety, Water Quality and Protection of Species at Risk in fresh water. Your proactive thoughts are welcome in these areas, please send your ideas to  [email protected]
  3. A Fundraising sub-committee, composed of 14 diverse lakefront neighborhood owners, is reaching out with a request of a  $300 contribution for each home.  Funds will be necessary to underwrite reports from experts in their respective fields, and to ensure healthy lake stewardship moving forward.
  4. The sLSA continues their goal of “Doing the right thing at swiya Lakes” and reminds all residents of our goal of working together with the shishálh Nation in a respectful, cooperative way.
  5. The sLSA team has created a new website which will provide information related to the freshwater lakes.  Links will be provided to other groups focused on the DMP.  An email will be coming out shortly to invite you to subscribe to the new site so that we can follow privacy rules to use your email address to send sLSA updates.

A thorough and informative update from our friends at the Waterfront Protection Coalition (WPC) is available at this link.  https://waterfrontprotection.org/january-21-update/       While our lake environment and requirements may vary, we continue to work closely with them.

A final reminder to continue sending your thoughts to the comments portal:
