Fresh Water Dock Management - Update

Fresh water discussions have been on hold until this July 15th, when Andrew McFadyen, Larry Van Hatten, Brad Edgelow and Bev Van Hatten had a zoom call with WLRS and shishalh representatives.  

Takeaways are as follows: 

1.     WLRS and shishalh’s aggressive timeline for next steps includes the self registration system to open for freshwater private moorage in the next few months

2.     There is a planned re-inventory of docks, boathouses and boat ports on freshwater lakes this August. The purpose is to confirm the last inventory and to pick up docks that may have been moved last time for winter storage.  We have requested to have a representative on board.  

3.     Grandfathering of docks, boathouse and boat ports,  present as of July 1st, 2024 , appears to be confirmed. 

4.     Grandfathered dock, boathouses and boat ports will have 10 years  to update polystyrene foam to encapsulated or a non-polystyrene foam system. Those structures identified with spalling styrofoam will have 2 years to update.

5.     Light penetrating decking, as well as other best management practices, are an ongoing discussion -  it is a work in progress, with more discussions necessary. sLSA representatives are at the table .

6.     There appears to be some indication that new boat ports may be permitted in the future.  No commitment at this time. New boathouses appear to be a non-starter.  (Boathouses having solid walls v. Boat ports just having roof supports.)

7.     WLRS and shishalh staff, with the exception of those doing the inventory, will be on vacation, on and off, for the rest of the summer, so we do not expect any further meetings or updates until the fall.
